“That’s a good girl, Sadie,” Ruby talked quietly to the mare as Doc rubbed the fluid away from the foals delicate nostrils and ears. He gently pushed the placenta down the foal’s neck and placed the perfectly formed black and white head on the straw to prepare for the rest of his birth. Then he turned his attention back on Sadie. “Let’s see if we can get this little guy out now.”

It was as if Sadie listened. With the next push, the colt was out to his shoulders.

Ruby kept her hands on Sadie’s back, knowing she was in serious pain.

“Get some more towels, we need this colt dry so I can get hold of him. He’s got some wide shoulders. She may need a little help passing them.” Doc held out his hand for Matthew to hand him a towel.

“Him?” Ruby smiled hopefully at Billy in spite of her insecurity about their personal situation.

Sadie’s breathing was rattled and deep. She fidgeted and snorted, thrashing about, trying to stand and move away from the foal, and the people causing her all this discomfort.

“Talk to her, Ruby. She needs to keep still for a minute,” Doc said insistently, showing seriousness in his eyes that told her Sadie and the colt could both be lost in these next few minutes if she didn’t cool it.

Ruby knelt in front of her and ran a hand down her nose, Sadie’s nostrils flaring. “You need to push, girl. Your baby needs you to push.”

On cue, Sadie pushed again then finally, with the help of Kelly, Billy, and Doc, a beautiful single white-stockinged, Appaloosa stallion was born into the world. The black and white speckled rump wiggled as the feisty colt kicked and squirmed his way out of the sack, in search of the warmth and security of his exhausted mother.
